coming home to eARTh: Space, Line, Form
Book by A.V.Ilango and Srivi Kalyan has evolved into its current form over five years.
The idea originally evolved through a series of forty three lectures that A.V.Ilango gave to his students over a period of six months. These talks were recorded and collected into a crisp forty five pages. After about a year and a half, Srivi joined the project and started working on the book with Mr. Ilango. Over three and half years of weekly conversations, sometimes daily conversations, the book evolved to its current form.

Telling stories through pictures by Esther Elias
Thank you Esther Elias for the lovely article on children's book illustrators.
"Children are drawn into a book first by its visual language, says Srivi Kalyan, writer-illustrator of over 50 books and founder of art collective Fooniferse. “There’s an assumption that illustrators simply transliterate into pictures the writer’s words, but I see it otherwise. Illustrators evoke the ethos of a story, build curiosity and adventure into it, and pique the child’s interest in the story’s context.” This goes past the literal word, and into playing with picture compositions, often gently revealing the story’s subject from multiple directions and in different dimensions, until the completed story unveils the full picture in the child’s mind. In Srivi’s recently-illustrated book for Katha, on rhinoceros conservation, Run Ranga Run , she uses this tactic to see the rhino afresh in a new light, frame after frame. "

Brush Strokes by Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy
Thank You Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy for this wonderful interview and profile! It was a pleasure to share such depth of thought and talk about my creative process with you. Asian paints, Colour Quotient, Sept 2013 Issue, https://www.asianpaints.com/colourquotient/showcase/srivi-kalyans-brush-strokes/
“The creative process is like a ritual. It involves meditation, reflection, surrender. It means letting go of oneself and connecting with a greater river of creative force that is intertwined with all life. This is one of the reasons I don’t take on mural projects easily. To me a home or any interior with its people, dreams, hopes are all sacred spaces. What I create for such spaces, I believe must come from vision and meditation, not intellect and technique.”

Moment/s of the year

"We are especially happy about the Rhino book that we commissioned to Srivi Kalyan, the illustrator. With so many rhinos being killed, the great conservation success story is turning sour. Katha is striving to do its bit for the nation’s conservation efforts for animals on the verge of extinction. "

Incredible few months! Never ending wave of work, joy, mysticism, poetry and beauty with so many genuine, sensitive people. Illustrating a beautiful story by Geeta Dharmarajan about Rhinos for Katha. In love with these gentle creatures. Each time I sketch them, I begin to share some wonderful part of their inner world. Through this year, I have worked with so many young people and adults asking them to sketch nature and I constantly find them saying how they feel closer to nature after the exercise.

"Srivi Kalyan has numerous stories to tell about how children express themselves through art. Artist, illustrator, educator, graphic designer, writer and poet (closet dancer too!), she has not only illustrated and written stories and textbooks for children, but also used her multifarious skills to teach children."

Aishwarya's Interview for 'Times of India' My Times Ashok Nagar, Dec 2010
From Mary Tamer's Article, "Hardly Child's Play", A version of this article originally appeared in the Fall 2007 issue of Ed., the magazine of the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
"On the international front, recent graduate Srisrividhiya “Srivi” Kalyanasundaram, Ed.M.’07, already a published author in her native India, plans to take lessons learned in the Ed School’s Arts in Education Program to produce “culturally relevant books” for her country.
“I have a lot of plans for more children’s books,” says Kalyanasundaram, who has written and illustrated 10 books for children and teens. “One of the things I’ve been working on is how traditional Indian art models can be used as a new way of educating kids . . . using culturally relevant imagery. I’ve tried to look at how relevant I can make my work for Indian children today.”
Kalyanasundaram will soon find out. This summer she returned home to become creative director with Galli Galli Sim Sim, India’s version of Sesame Street."

"Illustrations by Srivi are beautiful and modernistic. The drawings of Hanuman resemble that of a child, probably in order to hold the interest of young readers. The expressive illustrations are the plus point of the book."

From Article on 'Sky Queen' by Sujata Chakrabarti, The New Indian Express (School Magazine, July 12, 2006)
"What strikes us most about Mamang Dai's The Sky Queen is its bright colour illustrations that are sprawled across the 30 odd pages of the book...
The illustrations in the book are done in bright colours, mainly bold pastels. The gaiety and festivity held during the course of the story, are well depicted through the illustrations, along with the costumes and jewellery of the north east Indian community."
