Dance
Dance is what drives me; The dance of shiva, the dance of the universe! Trained for 15 years in the traditional style of Bharatanatyam, my earliest reflections of the world, happened through the lens of dance. I guess that's what happens, when as a three year old, you learn to make hand gestures, fumbling, figuring out which two fingers must be held together to denote a peacock and which ones for the bark of a tree! I continue to be fascinated by movement and rhythm, the lines and energies that only dance can gift to the human body, in its gracefulness, intensity and also ferocity.
Due to various personal reasons, I have not continued dancing professionally, but do hope to bring together my dance and my visual art in the future. Even otherwise, the lines of my visual art, the rhythms of my poetry, the reflections of my installations arise from my engagement with dance.
I feel fortunate to have found the form and dance of Shiva as Nataraja and to have had time to research and understand its deeper meanings. The form, in itself, would have been such an incredible challenge for artists, and I cannot imagine anything less than a profound vision, that could have led to its creation. And in dancing, in learning to align myself, with this beautiful, vibrating form, I have found peace and silence.
